Thoughts on Patriotism

What thoughts cross your mind when you think of patriotism? Some people might quickly think of the American flag, Independence Day, or our Armed Forces. For me, they certainly all conjure up images of patriotism, but there was an idea presented at one of two roundtable committee meetings yesterday that had never crossed my mind: What is more patriotic than investing in our children? Michael Lannon, Superintendent of St. Lucie Schools emphatically connected the idea of investing in our children to America’s investment in space exploration in the 1950’s.

Both are patriotic in the sense that investments in these areas are crucial to the United States and maintaining our status as an elite and relevant world power.

Members of the Palm Beach Committee also touched on the idea, as well as a wide array of fresh and innovative ideas. Anthony Westbury, a member of the Treasure Coast steering committee and writer for TCPalm elaborates on our meeting in St. Lucie: Click here to read.
