A Safer World – One Child at a Time

Posted on 04/06/2011 @ 05:26 PM

As Regional Coordinator for West Florida, I am so fortunate to continually have the opportunity to meet amazing people throughout West Florida who are working to better the lives of our children. I met this week with Brenda Zofrea, founder and owner of Let’s B Safe. Brenda, a mom of two boys, uses a unique approach to help protect children from sexual abuse, while also improving basic literacy using research-based principles that align with Florida’s Sunshine State Standards.

Brenda’s book, also titled Let’s B Safe, accompanied by a plush “Be Safe Bee,” is the foundation of the program. Each year, trained volunteers read the book to first grade classes in the Manatee County School District. Thanks to donations from businesses and individuals, each child who participates in the program receives a copy of the book and a “bee.”

An inspiring video on the Manatee County School District website shows the program in action in the district, where over 5000 first graders have participated in Let’s B Safe since 2007. You can view the video here.

For more details about the program, visit the Manatee County School District website. Or call Brenda Zofrea at 973-800-3501
