A Winning Formula for Schools
The Miami Herald Editorial made their opinion on planning and investing in our public school system very clear yesterday: “Strapped public schools need South Florida legislators to step up on a long-range plan.”
One issue that not everyone realizes is that funding for public education began to plunge before the Great Recession. Per pupil funding in our public education system is currently sitting at the same level as a decade ago. The point here is that we cannot accept this as the status-quo. We must begin to plan and invest in public education as the economy improves. Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho made multiple suggestions at the state Board of Education meeting last month. One suggestion that I found particularly interesting was to “Develop a five-year statewide plan that earmarks a specific percentage of economic growth dollars to be reinvested in public schools year to year. Without consistent funding, public schools are losing their best teachers.”
