This week an amazing opportunity came about for the children of Florida. An opportunity in which Florida has a chance to compete for $100 million in federal dollars to move toward a better, more coordinated system of early care, development and learning.
As many of you know, if we invest wisely in early learning , children will be in far better shape later on. Let's not forget the research that illustrates a tremendous return on investment when investing in a child's education.
Rick Scott made clear he is in favor of our state competing for these dollars, which he announced last week. Yesterday, Speaker Dean Cannon and the Legislative Budget Commission agreed to place this issue on the agenda for a Sept. 7th meeting approaching next week.
Although it's still early, it is nice to see our leaders in Tallahassee are moving in a positive direction from what was a painful year regarding children's issues in 2010.
I promise to keep you posted as this issue goes through the process.
