Last weekend, I attended the Blue Ribbon Gala event sponsored by Angels Against Abuse in Pinellas County. What an eye-opening, inspiring evening!
Sandy Kearney, President and Founder of the organization, explained to the crowd that packed the ballroom that the mission of the Angels is to build awareness and educate the community regarding existing neglect and abuse against children. The Angels also provide support, both monetarily and through hands-on volunteer hours, to neglected and abused children who are removed from an abusive situation.
One of the most moving moments of the evening was a speech by a young woman who spent most of her childhood in the foster care system, experienced two failed adoptions, and eventually landed in the juvenile justice system. But what a success story she has: after all she experienced in her younger years, she is now completing a two-year degree program at St. Petersburg College, and she has recently reunited with the father she never knew as a young child.
For more information about Angels Against Abuse, read the article that Sandy Kearney recently wrote for the online magazine GRAND (“The Website for Today’s GRANDparents and the kids who love them”).
