Did you know that in the U.S., 1 out of every 3 mothers struggles to be able to provide diapers for her baby?
And did you know that those needy families don’t receive diapers from Medicaid, Medicare, Food Stamps, or WIC? And while it may seem logical to say that these moms should just use cloth diapers, that’s not as easy as it sounds. Many of these same moms have no washer or dryer, making it difficult to adequately clean the diapers. Most day care centers also refuse to allow babies to wear cloth diapers at their facilities.
Last summer when I was planning the Milk Party rally for Lee and Collier Counties, I came into contact with Rev. Rebecca Hines of Destiny Ministries of Southwest Florida, Inc., Home of Destiny Diaper Bank in Cape Coral. Rev. Hines is the self-professed “diaper lady” of Southwest Florida. Every time I communicate with her, I’m moved to tears by the stories she tells me about the families, both old and young, that she helps.
Rev. Hines works tirelessly to provide diapers, wipes, and other supplies for families. As of last September, six locations throughout Southwest Florida were distributing 4000 diapers a day. In addition, Destiny Diaper Bank runs a program called Beds for Babies, and also holds a “baby shower” each month for 20 moms who have no support from their families.
On Friday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Ft. Myers, Destiny Diaper Bank will hold its Hollywood Gala 2011 fundraiser to raise money to help supply diapers for these families. For more information about the event, diaper bank or how you can help, contact Rev. Hines at firstname.lastname@example.org.
