A Second Year in Head Start: Characteristics and Outcomes of Children Who Entered the Program at Age Three

The report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services profiles the second year in the program for 3-year-old Head Start children and families who were newly enrolled in fall 2006 and were still attending in spring 2008. The report analysis indicates that children began their program scoring below norms across developmental areas, but by the end of their second year scored at or above norms in their literacy development, including letter-word knowledge and early writing.

The report indicates that, while the families of children who entered Head Start as 3-year-olds face many challenges, as children complete their second year in the program they actively engage in activities that support children's learning and report positive experiences and engagement in Head Start.
