Posted on 04/12/2011 @ 03:00 PM

This past weekend, more than 900 people came to Art in the Park Miami to paint for education. Ed King, a pop artist from Miami, organized the project called the United Hearts of America. Hundreds of hearts were painted by community leaders, teachers, parents, children and others. According to The Miami Herald, “The first wave of painters included Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, School Board member Carlos Curbelo and Miami-Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs President Carolyn Nelson-Goedert.” All the participants were guided through the process by volunteers from City Year and Florida International University.

The Miami pop artist believes strongly in the importance of education and voicing your beliefs. Mr. King explains, “The project is about citizens coming together and speaking their feelings on education directly to the commander in chief." He plans to send three of the completed canvases to the White House, the U.S. Capitol and to the U.S. Department of Education, respectively. The fourth will stay here in South Florida.
