U.S. must invest in preschool programs

In a recent nationally televised forum on Latinos and education, President Obama addressed the problems facing disadvantaged kids, including the fact that they know considerably fewer words than middle-class children, by pointing out the importance of early childhood education.
Politicians in Illinois as well as early childhood policy analysts discuss how to maintain necessary funding for early childhood education programs in order to ensure that kids from disadvantaged groups will be well-prepared for the demands of the future economy.
James J. Heckman, professor of economics at the University of Chicago and a Nobel Laureate, puts it simply: "Early childhood education programs pay dividends for life."
