Want to help the economy and grow the workforce?

This is now so patently obvious that everyone should know and appreciate it, but - sadly - that is not the case:

Students in the United States -- and, particularly, in Florida -- significantly trail much of the rest of the world in virtually all fields of academic achievement. This, of course, undermines each student's inherent potential and it submarines our economy, costing the state and nation dearly when it comes to economic competitiveness and achievement.

The latest evidence arrives from the National Governor's Association, by way of an excellent blog post by Eve Samples of the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers.

She writes: "How do we improve high-school graduation rates, make American students more competitive and strengthen the workforce? Invest in early childhood care and education. It's not an easy sell in Tallahassee or Washington, especially not now."
