Overheating an infant can elevate risk of SIDS

With colder weather setting in almost everywhere, even in Florida, researchers are alerting new parents to a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) that is associated with winter.

They say that the use of extra blankets and heavy clothing to keep infants warm can lead to overheating - and elevate the risk of SIDS.

"Infants are sensitive to extremes in temperatures and have poor regulation of their body temperature," according to a news release issued by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, as reported by the HealthDay website. "Research has shown that multiple layers of clothing, heavy clothing, heavy blankets and warm room temperatures increase risk of SIDS."
