Legislator Read In on Early Learning - Nov. 20, 2017
State Rep. Evan Jenne visited two Hollywood preschools on Monday to better understand the context in early learning centers in Broward's District 99. The centers' staffs and children welcomed him and gave him a glimpse of the daily preschool setting.
As the son of a former teacher, Rep. Jenne already knew about some of the challenges educators face. But he also heard firsthand about high staff turnover and long hours for teachers. During tours at the Early Learning Center of Hollywood and Buttons and Bows, which were arranged by The Children's Movement, he also learned about successful initiatives, such as the Teach Scholarship by the Florida Office of Early Learning for teachers who wish to expand their education in early learning and bring their knowledge to their communities.
Rep. Jenne, Movement Board of Advisors member Renee Jaffe and others were serenaded by the children who will be singing at a local nursing home. He was also enthusiastic about reading books to the children at both centers.
"Both of us were able to hear and see the incredible work being done inside the classrooms," said Jaffe, CEO of the Early Learning Coalition of Broward County. "We in Broward County are lucky to have such dedicated teachers and providers working tirelessly to make sure our children are prepared and ready to learn."
At the end of his visits, Rep. Jenne told center directors not hesitate to contact him to advocate for early learning programs before the state Legislature.
