Group plans 'Milk Party' to help kids
Sep 26, 2010
As part of a statewide tour to get Florida's leaders to focus on the needs of children, child advocacy leaders will hold a rally Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Bailey Concert Hall at Broward College's central campus, 3501 SW Davie Road, Davie.
The rally is one of 17 such gatherings across the state from Pensacola to Key West sponsored by the Children's Movement of Florida.
Called Milk Parties, the rallies feature milk and cookies for the kids and a call to action for parents.
The tour is in its final leg in South Florida, and nearly 10,000 have attended so far.
Led by retired Miami Herald publisher David Lawrence Jr., the nonpartisan, privately funded children's movement is encouraging political leaders to devote more attention to the needs of kids. Many children have no health insurance, programs for special needs kids are often lacking, and 25 percent of Florida's public high school students don’t graduate.
Lawrence and other advocates will speak at the free, family-friendly rally, and there will be entertainment. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
