Failing is not an option for the Children’s Movement of Florida.
To kick-off the citizen-led, non-partisan movement, commonly known as the “Milk Party,” 15 rallies will be held throughout the state that start in Pensacola and ends in Key West. The rally comes to Tallahassee 6 p.m. tonight at the Leon County Civic Center.
Starting with rallies, the new citizen-led, non-partisan movement will not stop until children are made the state’s highest priority.
According to David Lawrence, Jr., former publisher of the Miami Herald, Florida ranks poorly in almost every measure where the legislature invests in children; whether it’s children not covered by health insurance, low graduation rates or poorly coordinated early screening and treatment programs.
“Since we are in Tallahassee, we want to be the biggest and best rally,” said Anna Johnson, head of the local committee.
The movement has reached out to schools, churches, organizations and families to come show their support for the movement.
Milk, cookies and pizza will be served and entertainment will be provided by high school bands, cheerleaders and dance troops.
Lawrence, along with Florida State University basketball coaches Sue Semrau and Leonard Hamilton and Candy Fisher, wife of FSU head football coach Jimbo Fisher, will speak at the event.
“We need to all come together with a voice to gain the attention of state leaders. A loud voice,” Johnson said.
