Margaret Tidmore: Mentor coordinator and parent liaison, New Horizons Learning Center

Ted Granger, Tallahassee Chair

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends. to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

After retiring in 1998 from Bay District Schools in Panama City, working with special needs and at risk students, Margaret volunteered to start a mentor program in 2000 at the local second-chance school, New Horizons Learning Center. There she serves as mentor coordinator and parent liaison. The center has 60 mentors and 30 business partners. Mentors range anywhere from veterans to military, to retirees to local business people.

In the past, Margaret has been active politically as president of the local Federated Republican Woman, as State Caring for America chair and as an alternate delegate to the 2004 Republican National Convention.

She is active in military and veteran activities and chaired a "Welcome Home" event for two wounded soldiers filling the Civic Center with 2,500 people. Margaret continues to serve in different capacities for veterans and the military. Her father, brother, husband and son all served in the military.

Margaret also is a board member for the Bay Take Stock In Children Foundation, is a member of the Youth Department for the Panama City Woman's Club, and sits on the steering Committee for The Children's Movement of Florida.

Margaret is also an active member of the First Baptist Church in Panama City. She is a widow with four children, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
