Kathryn Hensley: St. Lucie County School Board
"Advocating for the well-being and education of every child is always energizing and often politically frustrating; however, the mission is of paramount importance to the life of each young citizen and the future of our state and nation. It is the morally correct thing to do as well as the best return on the taxpayers' investment dollar. Putting the best interests of children first will always more than pay for itself in the long run and create a better quality of life for all."

Born into a farming family in Illinois, education and service were emphases for Kathryn Hensley and her nine siblings. After graduating from Western Illinois University, she pursued the career of education in Iowa, and Oregon before moving to Florida in 1983 .She and her high school sweetheart have been married for 43 years and are the parents of three St. Lucie County public school and university graduates who live in Gainesville.
Eager to be an active participant in creating opportunities for all children, Kathryn was elected to the St. Lucie County School Board in 1996. Knowing that all aspects of the community impact the future of children led her to become involved with all sorts of organizations that are part of the continuum of designing the future for her county and region. A few examples of the 30+ groups and organizations are the Children's Services Council, the Early Learning Coalition of St. Lucie County, the Transportation Planning Organization, the University of Florida IFAS/Extension Advisory Service, the Hibiscus Children's Center, the SLC Chamber of Commerce and the Treasure Coast Council of Local Governments. Building collaborations among many organizations with the shared commitment to create a sustainable economy with a pathway to success for every child has been her passion for decades. That's the essence of her dedication to Kids at Hope and the Children's Movement.
