Bosses for Babies

How This Boss Makes an Impact for Children in Florida

Under the guidance of Albert E. Dotson, Jr., Bilzin Sumberg has put serving children at the center of its philanthropic and pro bono activity. Through its Matters of the Heart pro bono program, the firm’s attorneys provide life-changing pro bono legal counsel on behalf of children and minors for a range of needs, working closely with non-profit partners such as Florida Foster Care Review, Lawyers for Children, Dade County Legal Aid, and Legal Services of Greater Miami. The Matters of the Heart program works in tandem with Bilzin Sumberg Cares, the centerpiece of the firm’s community engagement. Drawing on the dedication of Bilzin Sumberg’s attorneys and staff, the program has spawned numerous initiatives to serve vulnerable and at-risk youth, from back-to-school drives and children’s reading programs, to volunteering with organizations focused on child welfare services.

These outward-facing programs run parallel to Bilzin Sumberg’s internal family-friendly policies for attorneys with children, including extended maternal and parental leave and reduced/flexible schedules for caregivers with young children. In addition, all firm employees can take advantage of an Employees Assistance Program that offers childcare referrals and tax-advantaged child care savings accounts. The firm also offers lactation rooms for nursing mothers.
